Abstract:
Bulk metallic glasses (BMGs) show unique mechanical properties due to their long-range disordering atomic structure and are regarded as one of promising engineering materials. But their room-temperature brittleness and strain-softening during deformation have beena stumbling block for practical structural applications. To solve this problem, many approaches have been developed among which the concept of “transformation-induced plasticity” (TRIP) was proved to be effective to enhance both tensile ductility and work-hardening capability of metallic glasses. BMG composites with not only tensile ductility but also work-hardening capability was successfully fabricated by this approach. However, the TRIP-phase-reinforced BMG composites have unique formation and deformation mechanisms. In this brief review, the formation, deformation behavior, optimizing strategies and ductilizing mechanism were summarized and the potential developments were also discussed.
