Thermal barrier coating (TBCs) is one of the most important materials to keep high efficient gas turbine working stability. It can not only improve the corrosion resistance and operated temperatures of gas turbine, but also reduce the fuel consumption and extend the lifetime of gas turbine, and so on. The current TBCs is yttria stabilized zirconia (YSZ), there are some limitations of YSZ, such as the operating temperature less than 1200℃ because of volume change caused by phase transition, which make coatings failure. It’s urgent for us to develop new kind of TBCs in current. There are several kinds of TBCs with better thermal conductivity or thermal expansion coefficient than YSZ, but YSZ has better mechanical properties than these potential thermal barrier coatings compounds, depended on its ferroelastic properties. Rare earth tantalate is a new kind of ferroelastic materials, its operating temperature up to 1600℃, what’s more it has excellent high temperature phase stability and mechanical properties, and the changed volume of phase transition is tiny, and so on. Moreover, its thermal conductivity is lower than YSZ and other TBCs compounds. Finally, the rare earth tantalate is the potential thermal barrier coatings as the next generation of gas turbine.
