Abstract:
Metallic biomaterials such as stainless steels and titanium alloys are widely used in medical areas including orthopedics, dentistry and coronary stents. Biodegradable magnesium alloys are a new class of metallic biomaterials that are being studied and developed with attractive future of clinical applications. In order to solve the currently existed bacterial infections caused by implants, it is great significance to study and develop novel metallic biomaterials with antibacterial functions, which is also a new exploration to realize the structural/functional integrity for metallic materials. This paper briefly introduces the recent research progresses on antibacterial functions of stainless steels, titanium alloys and biodegradable magnesiumbased materials, and proposes the future applications for antibacterial metallic biomaterials.
