Abstract:
Cyclododecane can sublime at room temperature with no residue left on the protected cultural relics and have no effects on future analysis and restoration of the relics. Such advantage makes cyclododecane very popular in art conservation since 1995 when it was firstly used by conservators. It had been used on variety of materials, including wall paintings, paper, textiles, ceramics, painting lacquer wares, metals, and friable materials in the field of excavation. In this paper, the physical and chemical properties of cyclododecane, its crystallization behavior, its sublimation kinetics and residue analyses are summarized. Several successful case studies are reviewed. At the end, we discuss the potential environment health safety (EHS) related issues of cyclododecane and find that the health and safety information of cyclododecane is always inaccurate. Conservators should pay attention on the toxicity of cyclododecane until more is known about its effect on human health. Precautions should be taken to protect themselves when cyclododecane is largely used. Some potential substitutes for cyclododecane are also suggested.
