Abstract:
Electromagnetic (EM) metamaterial usually possesses peculiar constitutive parameters and designable or tunable EM properties that can not found in natural material. It becomes a hot research topic among physics, material research and information science in recent years due to its ability of manipulation of electromagnetic wave propagation. In this paper, we first describe the theoretical concept of the EM metamaterial and analyze the present research status with the emphasis on how the western countries support the metamaterial research. In the second part, we report several attempts by group in Nanjing University that are trying to apply the metamaterial concept to microwave absorbers or steal technology, including design of metamaterial microwave absorbers, chiral metamaterial based microwave absorber, tunable or switchable microwave absorbers. Comparing with conventional microwave absorber, these designs have the advantages of designable physical parameters and tunable properties, enhancing the ability of manipulating the EM wave with metamaterials.
