Abstract:
The advantages of several advanced methods in characterizing the microstructural evolution during ageing precipitation of Al alloys, including high-angle annular dark field -scanning transmission electron microscopy, 3-dimensional atom probe, selected area electron diffraction simulation and first principle calculations, have been introduced. The progress in investigating the effects of Cu addition on the microstructural evolution during ageing precipitation of 6000 and 7000 Al alloys with these methods is briefly reviewed. The advancing of these techniques and the progress in microstructural investigations promise a bright future of alloy design by combining quantitative simulation on microstructure of Al alloys with key experimental verifications.
