Abstract:
Over the last 40 years the demands for less flammable synthetic polymers have changed from ignition suppression to lower smoke and toxicity, to “halogen-free”.  Over the next decade sustainable fire retarded materials will be required.  Meeting all the requirements for sustainability is a complex challenge, requiring a full understanding of the product’s life cycle, with particular emphasis on raw materials selection and end-of-life processing.  A brief description of the unexpected problems of halogenated flame retardants is presented.  This is followed by a discussion on the sustainability requirements of fire safe materials, and the critical areas of the product’s life cycle.  Finally, some recent examples of sustainable developments of fire safe materials are presented.
