Abstract:
Intelligent responsive materials exhibit abrupt changes of physical and/or chemical properties in response to external stimuli. This kind of materials is of great importance in both basic researches and applications, especially in the field of biomedical materials. Besides the traditional photo, pH, magneticresponsive materials, this article briefly summarizes materials responding to several types of biological signals including enzymes, glucose and other biomolecules. The materials with multiresponsive properties are emphasized with respect to the applications for gene and drug delivery. New breakthroughs are introduced on the interactions between the intelligent materials and cells, such as cellular uptake, intracellular transportation and distribution as well as responsivity. The importance of specific stimuliresponsivity such as volume expansion and contraction is envisaged in terms of cellsparticles interaction. This would be intriguing to understand the biocompatibility and some other issues of the stimuliresponsive particles, which in turn can guide the design of delivery carriers of better biological performance.
